Computer power saver featuring: Granola

The Philippines has the most expensive electricity rate in whole of asia (according to statistical reports).

We are already in the modern era and almost all equipments are using electricity. everywhere you look you will be able to see gadjets using electricity to power up. even electric motor vehicles adds up to the statistics.

Advocacies for a greener environment are on the rise to support our Mother Earth. So i decided to share this topic to my blog.

Granola is a power saving software aimed to lower down electric consumption cost of computer processors. It works by undervolting the system resulting in lowering the speeds of the processor.

A typical computer processor uses around 45-100 watts of power. just imagine your lightbulb using that specified power consumption. A computer that runs basic chores of surfing the web, playing audio and video may seem overrated to use such power requirements and may result to impractical electricity cost.

Granola is an easy-to-use software to save electricity. You can download the program and then install it. After installation it will automatically configure itself to run the computer processor at a dynamic rate depending on the user demands. This is actually like a feature of modern intel processors specifically codenamed the sandy bridge turbo mode where the computer runs @ higher clockrate to alleviate the demand for power.

When you do things like surfing the web, playing music, watching videos or streaming live feeds online your computer dynamically runs at lower speeds. This results to lower power consumption, less heat generated by the CPU. practical isn't it? yes and this is for windows, obviously if your running another operating system specially unix then chances are your a computer geek that doesn't need to read this. =)

Granola has three power policy setting, the lowest speed, the miserware, and the highest power. you can right click the globe icon at the lower right of your screen near the time and date to see this after installation.

The lowest speed power policy will set your computer to run at it's lowest speed (minimum) this is not dynamic. This is ideal to laptops and netbooks, low power, less heat.

The Highest power policy will set your computer to always run at it's highest, ideal to desktop computer servers that need not to be interrupted because of important works.

The Miserware power policy setting is the dynamic setting that lets your computer run intelligently on it's power consumption.

Additional tips in power saving, set your computer to sleep mode whenever idle. you can do this in windows by clicking control panel in the start menu and clicking the power options, you can set the power feature by setting it to sleep in idle mode.

Granola by Miserware is a freeware and you can check this link for additional information and downloads.
